Birth*Hattie A. Burgis was born circa 1859.1
She was the daughter of Able Burgis.1
Occupation*Hattie A. Burgis was a dressmaker in September 1902 at Mason, Ingham Co., MI.1
MarriageShe married Daniel Webster Dunshee, son of John R. Dunshee and Clarissa Whither, on 12 September 1902 at Ithaca, Ingham Co., MI; by clergyman J.R. Baldwin.1
Residence*Hattie A. Burgis and Daniel Webster Dunshee lived between 1904 and 1908 at Mason, Ingham Co., MI.2
Story*Daniel and Hattie's accounts differ substantially in explaining the reason and manner for their separation. Daniel's account was stated in March 1911 by four fellow soldiers. "In the fall of 1908, said Dunsha and wife then living together, moved into a house owned by one Elmer Hulse, at the request of said Hulse, Dunsha was dissatisfied with the conduct of his wife with Hulse, but having no place to go, remained until about February 1st, 1909, when one terribly cold morning Hulse asaulted Dunsha and threw him out of doors, telling him with frightful threats never to return. Dunsha was insufficiently clothed, but did not dare go back and was taken in by comrades who had pity on him. Mrs. Dunsha would not live with her husband, but remained with Hulse, living with him until the matter caused an unpleasant scandal. Dunsha went away from Mason where this occurred, and by hard work aided by his little pension, has managed to live. Now we, the undersigned did not see Hulse assault Dunsha and throw him out of the house, and we did not hear the threats made by Hulse, but we do know that Dunsha came away from his late home one exceedlingly cold winter morning only partly clothed, and that he did not dare to return to the house alone; we know that his wife continued to live with the man who treated her husband so brutally ... Daniel W. Dunsha is an industrious man, and drinks no intoxicating liquors at any time.:
According to Hattie's January 1919 account, she "was married to Daniel W. Dunshee Sept. 12, A.D. 1902, and that they lived together as husband and wife until January 28th A.D. 1908, when said Daniel W., Dunsha without any cause wholly abandoned and deserted this deponent and for a time he remained at Grand Ledge, Michigan, where he remained for some three years and then this deponent made application for one half of said Daniel's Pension and which was allowed her as near as she recollects about the later part of June, A.D. 1911:
...It was a common remark among our neighbors at Mason, Michigan that Mr. Dunsha was better able to work than this affiant was. It was a common practice of his while said Daniel and this affiant lived in Mason Michigan for said Daniel to go and sit around at the stores, hotels, and other lounging places day and evenings but not to do any kind of labor at any time; He was a great user of Morphine and tobacco and spent nearly all of his pension for those two drugs.:
He was very irritable about his house and away fro [sic] home with members of his family and others. About a month before he left this affiant he got greatly angered one Christmas Eve over preparing some Christmas present that your affiant was preparing to send away and knocked this affiant down and the next day said Daniel went voluntarily and gave himself up to the sheriff.:
This affian had never mistreated said Daniel and had always after their said marriage been a good, true and faithful wife to said Daniel W. Dunsha."2
OccupationHattie A. Burgis was a watchman in an auto factory in 1920.3
Census*She appeared on the census of January 1920 at 1418 Washington Ave, Lansing, Ingham Co., MI.3
