Note*Robert Woodson excerpt from "The Woodsons and Their Connections"
Robert was born about 1660 at Curles in Henrico county, Virginia where, he spent his entire life, and died there in 1729. His will was recorded in Henrico Court, February, 1729. In it he calls himself Robert Woodson, Sr., to distinguish himself from his son and three of his nephews, all of whom bore the name of Robert. He also names in the will four of his sons and three of his daughters. As he had ten chiildren, it is likely that the three not named in the will were dead at that time. He was twice married; first, to Sarah Lewis who was probably a sister of John Lewis of Warner Hall. John Lewis and Lydia ______, hisw wife, first settled on Poropotankk Creek in 1653. To them were born, probably a number of children; one of whom was Major John Lewis who married Elizabeth Warner, daughter of Col. Augustine Warner and wife, Mildred Read. It is probable that Sarah Lewis, wife of Robert Woodson, was a daughter of Major John Lewis and Isabella _____. This family became very prominent in colonial affairs and in the annals of Virginia. Robert Woodson married, second, Rachel Watkins. "Various branches of the Woodson family number members of the Watkins family among their ascendants. There are several families of this name found among the old settlersw. They are of Welch origin; descdending from James Watkins "labourer" who was one of the emirants in the Phoenix about 1608, and who frequently accompanied Captain John Smith in his adventures and voyages of discovery on the "Chisapeack Bay." Some branches of this old and highly honored family settled in Powhatan, Appomattox, Cumberland, and other counties in Virginia. Some of the early members of the family engaged in the4 occupation of manufacturing trays, and for several generations their descendants were called "Tray makers." Henry Watkins of Malvern Hills, born 1637, was a Quaker. In his will, 1717, he mentions sons, Henry -- sometime member of the house of burgesses, and married Mary Crisp --- John, Benjamin, Joseph, and Stephen. (See Catalog by F.N. Watkins) As this will was witnessed by Robert Woodson, it is quite likely that his second wife, Rachel Watkins, was a daughter of Henry Watkins of Malvern Hill.4

Note*Robert Woodson Excerpted from "The Woodsons and Their Connections"
"Robert was born, according to his own despostion, in the year 1634, at Fleur de Hundred, on the south side of James River, in what is now Prince George county, Virginia, some _____ miles above Jamestown.
It was here that the family lived at the time of the massacre by Indians on the 18th of April, 1644, when Robert and his elder brotherr John were saved by being thrust into a piut made for the purpose of keeping potatoes; from which circumstance their descendants, for several generations bore the sobriquet of "Potato Hole Woodsons."
From this time nothing is definitely know of Robert and his brother John until 1679 when both of them are enumerated among the "tithables" at Curles, a plantation on the north side of James River in Henrico county, a short distance above Fleur de Hundred. This place, later, became noted as the seat of the Randolph family. At an early age, possibly about the year 1656, Robert Woodson married Elizabeth Ferris, daughter of Richard Ferris of Curles. "She was descended from an ancient Norman family, Henri de Ferriers of Gascony. In American Ancestry, vol VII, is the following statement; "The Ferris family was originally from Leicestershire, England, descended for Henri de Ferriers, son Gwalchelme de Ferriers, Master of Horse to the Duke of Normandy." (Americans of Gentle Birth, vol. 1, p. 358)
There is a grant of 1785 acres of land October21, 1687, to Mr. RObert Woodson, Mr. Richard Ferris, Mr. Giles Carter, William Ferris and Roger Comins, at White Oak Swamp, on the north side of James River, in the parish of Varina. Robert Woodson, in 1707, made a deed to his grandsons, William Lewis, Jr. and Joseph Lewis. (Wm. & Mary Qtly., V. IX, p. 255.) The date of his death is noth known, but it was shortly after making this deed, as he was about seventy-three years old at that time. It is not positively known what public serrvice he rendered the colony but living as he did, at a time when every man had to bear his share of the public burden, it is confidently believed that, as a citizen and member of the colony, he was faithful in the performance of hisduty, as his descendant have ever been, In some publications he is frequently spoken of as Colonel Robert Woodson. If he held the military rank of colonel, it was of course by authority of the British government, as the entire colony was under British control at that time."4
