Story*THOMAS DUNSHEE came from Londonderry to Peterborough, N.H., where he m. Hannah Smith, b. Aug 29, 1761, dau. of John and Mary (Harkness) Smith of Peterborough. John Smith. b. Ireland about 1715, was founder of a famous family. (see Smiths' "History of Peterborough") In July 1768, Thomas Dunshee bought of John Parks, lots 7, 8, and 9, in the eighth range of lots in Jaffrey (Middle Monadnock). Here on lot 7, rand 8, he built the so-called Baker buildings, which remained in use, entirely without change, for nearly 130 years. By the Census of 1790, his family consisted of himself and wife, two sons and a daughter under sixteen. A later report states that there were eight children. On Jan 9, 1799, he sold his farm with buildings thereon to Robert Harkness of Jaffrey, q.v. and removed to Bristol, Vt., where he d. Nov 29, 1846, a. 88. His wife d. Feb. 16, 1821, a. 59. Children bp. in Jaffrey about 1790:
2 I. Polly
3 II. Name illegible, probably Patty
4 III. John, a wheelwright, lived in Bristol, VT; m. Alma, surname unknown, and had children and grandchildren. He d. Jan. 20, 1869., a. 80.
5 IV. Jesse.2
MarriageThomas Dunshee married Mary Smith; John Burbank discounts Mary Smith as a wife of Thomas, thereby reducing the number of Thomas's in Bristol and adding Robert as another son of Thomas & Hannah as follows:
"Some have thought there was another Thomas Dunshee in Bristol based upon Hiram Carleton, Genealogical & Family History of the State of Vermont
(1903) p. 274:
"Among the early pioneers contributed to Bristol town by that fruitful mother of colonists called Connecticut, was Thomas Dunshee, who was of Scotch-Irish lineage. He settled on a farm and spent his whole life in the peaceful pursuits of agriculture. He married Mary Smith, who died in 1887 after becoming the mother of six children. Among these was Robert Dunshee who grew up on his father's farm in Bristol and learned the trade of a wheelwright..."

If Carleton is correct, Mary had to be born at least by the early 1780's to give birth to Robert in 1797-8 and she would have been over 100 when she died in 1887. Because Munsill's history doesn't mention a second Thomas or Mary, but does have the Thomas of Bristol married to Hannah Smith, it is speculated that Carleton was misinformed. No gravestones or vital records for this second Thomas or Mary have been discovered. The Thomas3 Dunshee (Thomas2,1), born around 1758 Londonderry NH, and who died 29 Nov 1846 Bristol VT at age 88, married to Hannah, daughter of John & Mary (Harkness) SMITH, born around 1762 and died 16 Feb 1821 at age 59, quite possibly is the Thomas that Carleton has in mind. If so, Robert, below, would be the sixth child in that family which agrees with Carleton's statement that Mary had six children by Thomas. If that were really her name, we ought to be able to locate more of those children than simply Robert. The only other problem with merging the two men named Thomas as a single person is the location given for their birth. Carleton says CT but at that point, perhaps he was misinformed also. The fact that Hannah's mother's name was Mary Smith supports the speculation that Carleton confused her name with that of Hannah. Until proven otherwise, this document will tentatively merge the two Thomas men into one.

Thomas was on the 1790 census of Bristol VT, but Hannah was evidently remained or returned to NH when were born.3,4

Note*Thomas Dunshee and Hannah Smith According to the 1852 "Genealogy of the Family of William Smith of Peterborough, N.H.," Hannah Smith was "b. Aug. 29, 1763, d. 1836 m. Dunshe, Bristol, Vt. There children were 1 Mary, 2 Smith, 3 John, 4 Edward, 5 William, 6 Jesse, 7 Nancy, 8 Eliza."5
Birth*Thomas Dunshee was born in 1758 at Londonderry, Rockingham Co., NH; age 88 at death.2
He was the son of Thomas Dunshee and Elizabeth Moore.2
Marriage*Thomas Dunshee married Hannah Smith, daughter of John Smith and Mary Harkness, circa 1785 at ?, Peterborough, Hillsborough Co., NH.2,6
Census*Thomas Dunshee and Hannah Smith appeared on the census of 1790 at Jaffrey Twp., Cheshire Co., NH; family included 2 sons under age 16 (Smith & John) and 1 daughter (Mary).2,7
AnecdoteDid Thomas father eight children, as "Generations of Jaffrey, NH" indicated? If so, and Robert is also his son, the perhaps "Patty" and "Polly" are the same person -- nicknames for Mary, Nancy, or Elizabeth.2,5
Census*Thomas Dunshee appeared on the census of 1800 at Bristol, Addison Co., VT; family included one male aged 26-44 (Thomas); four males under age 10 (Robert, Jesse, Edward, & William); two males aged 10-15 (John & Smith); one female aged 26-44 (Hannah); one female under age 10 (Nancy); and one female aged 10-15 (Mary).8
Note*He took freemans oath in 1804 at Bristol, Addison Co., VT.9
CensusHe appeared on the census of 1810 at Bristol, Addison Co., VT; one male aged 45 and over (Thomas); one female 45 and over (Hanna); 2 males aged 10-15 (Jesse & Robert); two males aged 16-25 (Edward, William, John or Smith??); one female under 10 (Eliza); and one female 10-15 (Nancy).10
StoryWhy were only two males, aged 16-26, enumerated with Thomas in the 1810 census? Were they Edward, William, John or Smith?10
CensusHe and Hannah Smith appeared on the census of 1820 at Bristol, Addison Co., VT, M; with two additional males age 16-26 and two additional females age 16-26.11
Death*Thomas Dunshee died on 29 November 1846 at Bristol, Addison Co., VT.2,12
