Story*Dunshee, Arthur Allen - obituary from USGENWEB for Page County Iowa
Arthur Allen Dunshee, son of Fred and Jessie Brennaman Dunshee, was born on April 25, 1920, in Chariton, Iowa and passed away with his family surrounding him in Clarinda, Iowa on August 24, 2009 at the age of eighty-nine years and four months.

He grew up in a family of five sisters and two brothers. During his youth he enjoyed helping his father in the family furniture, hardware, and mortuary businesses. While in high school he participated in tennis, mixed choir, various music, thespian and literary activities, graduating from Chariton High School in 1938.

He was attending college at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, when World War II broke out, at which time he enlisted in the United States Army. He eventually saw overseas duty in the European Theatre of Operations and as Staff Sergeant led his mortar squad through Normandy Beach to St. Lo^ and in battles all across Europe, including the Battle at Remagen Bridge. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for valor, the Oak Leaf Cluster, and multiple good conduct awards.

He was married to Jean Carolyn McCollough January 23, 1946, the year he completed his college education at the University of Nebraska, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Following graduation he moved to Atlantic, Iowa, managing the shoe department in J. C. Penney's. He moved with his family to Clarinda in the spring of 1949 where he was employed at Martin's Shoe Store for eight years until purchasing Hunts' Shoes in partnership with Merwin Martin in January of 1957. He later assumed full ownership and operated Art's Shoes for twenty-seven years on the south side of the square until his retirement in October, 1983.

He will be remembered by family and friends for his strong work ethics, value system, and sense of fairness and integrity.

While in the retail business he was active in the Chamber of Commerce, serving on the board of directors and often headed retail and community committees.

He was a faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as past church treasurer, trustee, and deacon. He was a member of the American Legion for over sixty years in which he was a past commander and had been local and county adjutant at various times. He was also a life time member of the AMVETS. Most recently, he was honored to participate in the Western Iowa World War II Honor Flight on May 5, 2009 to Washington D.C.

He took great pride in his family and was deeply dedicated and supportive of his beloved wife Jean, always greatly appreciative of her constant tenderness and devotion to their family. He had a strong faith in God and a great love for life and his country, reflected through the many writings and notes he shared with his children and grandchildren throughout the years. His quick-wit and dry sense of humor are a source of enjoyment and fond reflection for all that loved him. Following retirement, he especially cherished time spent with his family, enjoyed gardening, was an avid reader, and passionate Cornhusker fan.

Arthur Dunshee is survived by his wife, Jean Carolyn Dunshee, seven children Linda Rae (Dennis) Nissen of Griswold, Iowa; Leslie Allen (Faye) Dunshee and Calvin Marshall (Fran) Dunshee of Ames, Iowa; Carolyn Kay (Gary) Tharp of Des Moines, Iowa; Charles Edward Dunshee of Silver City, Iowa; Anita Donelle VonDielingen of Atlantic, Iowa; Lisa Jean Whitehill of Clarinda, Iowa; twelve grandchildren: Angela Lynn Zimmerman, Washington, D.
