He and Andrew C. Dunseth might be the same person. He and William Dunshee MAY NOT be brothers, as I have found no definitive proof that this is actually true. He was a coal merchant and contractor. According to a 1913 history of the Allegheny Valley, he "opened the first coal mine on the Monongahela river, opposite McKeesport, built the first incline coal road, and adopted the first flange wheeled cars for conveying coal from the pit mouth to river, where it was loaded into boats for lower river ports. About 1847 he sold the coal road to his son, William Dunshee, who in cooperation with Captain Daniel Pollard, operated it in running and shipping coal to lower ports until about 1859, when what was know as the Colonel Neal coal was worked out."2547 He and Margaret Short appeared on the census of 13 Aug 1850 at Williamsburg, Clermont Co., OH, OH August of 1850.2548

He then retired from the coal business, but continued until within several years of his decease to operate the Marine ways adjacent to McKeesport. In early days coal was loaded in boats and floated, by use of sweps and steering oars, to the several markets along the Ohio and Monongahela rivers. Late in the fifties this method of transportation gave way to steamboats or towboats, as they are commonly called, and Captain Dunshee was one of the first advocates of the change. He was interested in the first steamboat built to transport coal "below," know as the "Erie," and in ten years the change was so complete that a floating coal-boat "below" was a rarity. He became interested in several towboats in his day, notably the "Robinson," the "Forman," the "Isaac Hammett," and the "Victor Wilson." The "Isaac Hammett" and "Victor Wilson" were called "twins," and had been built alike in all respects with a view of hitching both boats to the same lare tow, believing that in this way it could be better and more safely handled while conveying it down the river. It was not so great a success as was anticipated, and as it was found that better results could be obtained by leaving each of the towboats independent, this course was therfore adopted. During the early part of the civil war both boats were taken into the service of the United States government as dispatch boats and for towing mortar boats on the Mississippi river and other rivers thereto. The two boats, "Isaac Hammett" and "Victor Wilson," continued in the service until the close of the war, under the command of Commodore David Dixon Porter. They were several times under fire from the enemy, but escaped without being disabled. On several occasions they carried General Grant to and from points on the river. The "Victor Wilson" during the Red river expedition was under command of Captain Dunshee for a short time as a relief for the regular captain, Daniel Pollard. In 1856 Captain Dunshee built the first marine ways in the Monongahela river, near McKeesport. They were used for "docking boati" until the property was sold to the National Tube Works Company, when they moved "across" the river and again erected and operated until about 1895, at which time Captain Dunshee retired from active work.2616 He left a will on 22 Mar 1897 at McKeesport, Allegheny Co., PA.2617 He lived at 510 Ringgold St., McKeesport, Allegheny Co., PA.2618

Mildred M. Grindstaff, age 71, of Joplin, passed away at 3:40 a.m. on Sunday, February 14, 1999, at St. John's Regional Medical Center.

Born January 15, 1928, in Jasper, MO, she was the daughter of George Bastion and Mildred Dunshee Bastion, and lived in Joplin most of her lifetime. A 1945 graduate of Jasper High School, she attended the former Joplin Business College. For 37 years she was secretary of First Baptist Church of Joplin, retiring in July of 1998.

On August 20, 1948, she married George Grindstaff at Jasper. He survives. Additional survivors include a daughter, Evelyn S. Kingore and her husband Joe of Joplin; a brother, Marvin Bastion of Pensacola, FL; a sister Shirley Norris of Carthage; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Vesta Grindstaff of Joplin and her beloved granddaughter, Holly Kingore.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Dr. Duane Trimble officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
