"LEXINGTON MAN TAKES OWN LIFE --
Thomas Eugene Dunshee, aged 63 years, retired farmer and one of the most prominent men in Lexington, took his own life yesterday morning by jumping from the Main street bridge in that village into the Clearfork. John Castor who resides just east of the bridge saw what he thought to be clothing in the water early in the morning but thought nothing of it until he learned that Mr. Dunshee had been missing from his home since early morning, and upon investigation it was found to be the body of the unfortunate man. The body was removed from the stream and taken to the Benham undertaking parlors to be prepared for burial.

Coroner LeBarre conducted an inquest which developed the fact that Mr. Dunshee had been in ill health for several months and had worried to such an extent that friends believed him to be demented at different intervals. It is also believed that during these periods he contemplated self destruction from conversations he had with different business men in the village.

Mr. Dunshee had lived in Troy township and Lexington for the past 50 years, a number of years ago retiring from the farm and moving to Lexington. Since that time he had held almost every elective office in the village.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Claud, and one daughter, Mrs. Samuel Cureton, both of Lexington. Funeral arrangements have not been made.

He was also known as Oral Clark.2113 The Westmoreland Place development had its beginnings in April, 1913 when the brother filed a plat for a new ``exclusive subdivision'' on the east bench at 1300 South and 1500 East. This area was a bit above the downtown smoke and soot from railroads, industrial development, and the prevalent soft coal smoke of city homes. Another factor in the subdivision's location was the trolley car line on 1500 East that ran past the Uintah School and on to Sugar House. Jane Brinckerhoff and Stephanie Turner, both students of local history, were told by a Clark Dunshee daughter that the name Westmoreland Place was chosen by the British wives of the developers. This could be the case, but parenthetically, Salt Lake business executive Jack Lossee tells me there is a Westmoreland Place in St. Louis, and I'm familiar with another in California's Imperial Valley. More to the point, there is a similarly named development in Pasadena, where the Gamble House, a bungalow well known to many arch itects, was built by the firm of Greene and Greene.

Racist Covenants: The Heritage Foundation newsletter makes clear that no municipal zoning laws existed in Salt Lake in 1913. Instead, subdividers used restrictive covenants to control construction. Dunshee lots could only be sold to members of the white race, back then and in the future! The Dunshees required purchasers to spend at least $3,000 for construction of new residences. No garage could be built prior to completion of a house, preventing a ``shacky'' look. Finally and wisely, each house had to have a 25-foot front setback and a 35-foot rear setback.

Street pavement and curb-and-gutter work came almost immediately, and homes rose almost at once on Westmoreland, Filmore, Sherman and Glenmare streets, as well as on Harrison, which connected with local through-streets. In design, most Westmoreland Place bungalows were built from a popular California bungalow pattern book by Eric and William Ryberg.
