He was the guardian of Alexander & Martha McNeal following death of neighbor Alexander McNeal.13 He was a farmer.14 On 15 Sep 1768 Thomas Dunshee and Hugh Dunshee each signed a petition regarding disputed election procedures for Representative to Provance of New Hampshire at Londonderry (or Windham), NH.15 He left a will on 22 Jan 1772.16

He, in his younger days, went into the wilds of Maine and spent several seasons there in hunting and trapping.27 He was employed by Dr. Abraham Holland, as a hired hand, after both came to at Walpole, NH, circa 1784.28

THOMAS DUNSHEE came from Londonderry to Peterborough, N.H., where he m. Hannah Smith, b. Aug 29, 1761, dau. of John and Mary (Harkness) Smith of Peterborough. John Smith,. b. Ireland about 1715, was founder of a famous family. (see Smiths' "History of Peterborough") In July 1768, Thomas Dunshee bought of John Parks, lots 7, 8, and 9, in the eighth range of lots in Jaffrey (Middle Monadnock). Here on lot 7, rand 8, he built the so-called Baker buildings, which remained in use, entirely without change, for nearly 130 years. By the Census of 1790, his family consisted of himself and wife, two sons and a daughter under sixteen. A later report states that there were eight children. On Jan 9, 1799, he sold his farm with buildings thereon to Robert Harkness of Jaffrey, q.v. and removed to Bristol, Vt., where he d. Nov 29, 1846, a. 88. His wife d. Feb. 16, 1821, a. 59. Children bp. in Jaffrey about 1790:

5 IV. Jesse.46 He and Hannah Smith According to the 1852 "Genealogy of the Family of William Smith of Peterborough, N.H.," Hannah Smith was "b. Aug. 29, 1763, d. 1836 m. Dunshe, Bristol, Vt. There children were 1 Mary, 2 Smith, 3 John, 4 Edward, 5 William, 6 Jesse, 7 Nancy, 8 Eliza."47 He and Hannah Smith appeared on the census of 1790.48 He took freemans oath in 1804 at Bristol, VT.49

Also included was one female age 5-10 (Sophronia E.), and two females aged 20-30 (Miranda & wife of male aged 20-30?).231 He was owner and operator of a water powered saw mill at Bristol, Addison Co., VT.232 In 1841 Edward Dunshee purchased the land, approximately 20 acres, from the estate of Albert Dunshee.233

Dunshee's block, Bristol, VT.595 He appeared on the census of 1920 at West St,, Bristol, Addison Co., VT.596 In looking back to the late 1800's and early 1900's some of the Old Timers (if any of the species are still around) would distinctly recall a citizen who was well known throughout Addison County and in many parts of this state. during his long life he had many interesting experiences. This was Mr. Noble F. Dunshee, quite commonly called Colonel Dunshee.
Mr. Dunshee was born April 4th, 1833 and spent most of his life in Bristol. In 1849 Mr. Dunshee with two friends went to California to the gold fields but evidently did not make any startling 'strikes.' In his stop in Denver he became very interested in the town and purchased a sizable piece of real estate. Some of his ideas were used as plans went forward to build the city in its beautiful location.
In February 1857 Mr. Dunshee married Charlotte Soper, the ceremony being performed by Rev. David Bosworth. Less than ten years later rumblings of the Civil War were troubling the whole country. It is known that Mr. Dunshee organized at Bristol on Sept. 8, 1862 the Vermont State Volunteer Militia. It was mustered into United States service at Brattleboro, Vermont October 21, 1862. Mr. Dunshee was Captain of his Co. G. 14th Regiment and served until the end of the war.
In 1863 Mr. Dunshee was a member of the State Legislature. Governor Gregory Smith on July 18, 1864 appointed Mr. Dunshee to recruit 500,000 volunteers for the State of Vermont. These were to be found among the Negroes of South Carolina and Florida.
For many years Mr. Dunshee and his family lived on West Street, the house being an old landmark of the town. In 1957 this house was moved back to make way for a Gulf Oil Station. He started a dry goods business in 1883 in company with Willis Peake. Later he established himself in the so-called Dunshee block. Here with his son he carried on an active dry goods store until his death in 1893 at the age of 90 years. [This doesn't compute with date of birth given in this sketch] His son Harry continuted with the business for several years.
Mr. N. F. dunshee was known far and near as a fine business man and reliable in all his dealings. At times interested in politics, but a love for fine race horses was his outstanding hobby. He owned and drove some fine racers."

"Since he located in Ventura county, forty years ago, Winfield Scott Dunshee has been an eye witness of and an active participant in the wonderful transformation which has taken place here, his efforts and influence having greatly contributed to the development and prosperity of this locality. His career has been characterized by persistent and indefatigable industry along well directed lines and the splendid measure of prosperity which has crowned his efforts has been well merited, so that today no man holds a higher place in public esteem than he.
"Mr. Dunshee was born in the state of Wisconsin in 1862 and is a son of John and Rosina (Parmelee) Dunshee, both of whom were natives of Vermont....
"Winfield Scott Dunshee was reared in Santa Barbara county, securing his education in the public schools, and on April 1, 1886, he located in the Santa Ana valley, of which he was one of the earliest settlers, and here he has lived continuously since. On coming here he bought three hundred and sixty-seven acres of land, to the improvement and cultivation of which he devoted himself with such vigor and judgment that prosperity rewarded him and he added to his holdings from time to time until he is now the owner of three thousand and seventy acres of land. Elizabeth Robinson (Obituary)

BAINBRIDGE — Mrs. Elizabeth H. Robinson, age 65, of Bainbridge, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Robinson was born in Sidney on April 22, 1935, to Frank and Alta (Thomas) Dunshee.
She grew up in Sidney Center, attended Sidney High School and, after raising four daughters, returned to school and received her high school diploma.
Elizabeth was always a very hard worker. She worked at the Amphenol Company in Sidney from 1959 until her retirement in 1997. Her priorities were always with family and her home was the center of the many family gatherings she loved.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joel D. Hall, in 1963.
In 1968, she married her loving husband, Brian E. Robinson, on June 27.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Brian Robinson; her daughters, Carolyn (Al) Fisher of Masonville, Jeannie (Dave) Brockway of Unadilla, Cindy Hall of Winter Haven, Fla., and Amy (Reggie) Cole of Unadilla; her mother, Alta Dunshee of Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta; mother and father-in-law, Irv and Laura Biedekapp of Walton; her sisters, Joyce Gohl and Blanche (Jim) Powers; her brother and sister-in-law, Jan and Barb Robinson; sister-in-law, Madge Dunshee of Messina; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her very special and dear friend of 50 years, Carolyn Greer of Adams, Tenn., and Koreen and Bev.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her brother, William, and father, Franklyn Dunshee.
Service will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Chapel, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where her family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Interment will be in Walton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815, in her name would be appreciated.
